Design Thinking; My actionable learnings

24-May-2024

In the dynamic landscape of modern business, the culture of innovation is predominant. As companies strive to stay ahead in highly competitive markets, methodologies like enterprise design thinking have emerged as powerful tools to unlock creativity, encourage collaboration, and drive meaningful change. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of facilitating design thinking sessions for respected organisations such as ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, and SBI. This journey has been nothing short of enriching, offering a rich tapestry of experiences and invaluable lessons along the way.

First off,

Empathy is absolutely key, you’ve got to really understand where your users, customers, and stakeholders are coming from to create solutions that truly resonate.

Business model alignment, great design goes hand-in-hand with strong business strategy. we need to craft unique value propositions that get people excited and perfectly align with a company’s goals. It’s a win-win!

Iteration is everything, we can’t expect to get it right the first time. It’s all about rapid prototyping, gathering feedback, and refining your ideas based on what you learn.

Cross-functional collaboration, bringing together people with different backgrounds and expertise has been essential for coming up with comprehensive solutions.

Prototype early, prototype often, it’s been a game-changer, starting early and prototyping often has helped us visualise our ideas and test out assumptions in a really tangible way.

Bias toward action, it’s okay to fail along the way. In fact, it’s encouraged, failure is just another opportunity to learn and improve.

Design for scalability and sustainability, thinking long-term, scalability and sustainability are key considerations, our solutions need to be able to grow with us and be sustainable in the long run.

Cultivate a culture of innovation, none of this would be possible without a culture of innovation, we’ve really been working to create an environment where creativity and continuous learning are valued.

Data-driven decision making has been absolutely vital for us, we’re diving deep into analytics and listening closely to user feedback to make sure we’re on the right track. It’s like having a compass guiding us through the design process, helping us validate our assumptions and steer towards success.

Focus on outcomes, not features, but at the end of the day, it’s all about outcomes, not just features, we’re focused on solving real problems and delivering meaningful results for our users and stakeholders.

In wrapping up, working with top companies to run design thinking sessions has been an eye-opening journey. It’s taught me a lot about how putting people at the heart of innovation can truly transform things. When we focus on understanding others, bringing different perspectives together, trying out new ideas, working as a team, and most importantly, taking action, incredible things can happen.

These experiences have shown me that by being more empathetic, welcoming diverse voices, not being afraid to experiment, collaborating closely, and always pushing forward, companies can open up new doors of creativity and make real, positive changes in our fast-changing world.

As we keep moving forward in the business world, these lessons are like guiding lights, showing us the way to a future where innovation, resilience, and caring about people are what really matter.
